Second strategic challenge

Choosing target position and the path to it

"positions vary in terms of influence, profitability, and possibilities for making impact, so it is important to choose wisely"

Position selection provides direction and the base for a guidance-giving strategy for the organization

Once an ecosystem is selected and understood, organizations can choose how to interact with it. In essence, they identify a target future position and can then start strategizing on how to get there.

Ecosystem positions vary widely in terms of influence, profit potential, and possibilities for making impact, so it is important to choose wisely. It can be tempting to aim for a central position, but that is not always the best strategy. Other interesting positions include enabling or enhancing complementary roles, support functions, and capturing spill-over opportunities. Some can give great influence and others might be safer or more profitable.

Audax helps clients identify, (re)frame, and assess options, taking ecosystem foresight and their strategic intentions into account. This results in a guidance-giving strategy for the organization resting on a consistent strategy for ensuring beneficial ecosystem development.
